Convert JPG to HEIC

Drop a folder of JPG pictures and download HEIC copies that are roughly half the size with the same visual quality. The encode happens entirely in your browser using the open-source libheif library; no JPG ever reaches our servers.

How to convert JPG to HEIC

  1. Drop your JPG files into the box below.
  2. Each picture is re-encoded as HEIC inside your browser using libheif compiled to WebAssembly.
  3. Download the smaller HEIC copies and import them back into Photos if you wish.

Why convert JPG to HEIC?

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the modern container Apple shipped with iOS 11 in 2017. It compresses the same picture about 40–50% smaller than JPG with no perceptible difference, which is why one iPhone now fits twice as many photos in the same storage. Converting an existing JPG library to HEIC is most useful when you are running out of space on an iCloud account, an iPad, or a Mac. The catch: HEIC is not yet universally supported on Windows, older Android devices and many web upload forms, so only convert files you intend to keep on Apple devices. For everything else, leave the JPGs alone.

How we compare

The closest peer to this tool is Google's Squoosh, which also runs fully in your browser. Squoosh focuses on compression for the modern web and does not handle HEIC or batch conversion. Cloudconvert and Convertio cover more formats but upload your files to their servers and meter usage.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?+

No. The HEIC encoder runs locally in WebAssembly. Your originals never leave your device.

How much space do I save?+

Typically 40–50% per picture at the same visual quality. A 4 MB JPG usually becomes a 2 MB HEIC.

Will the picture lose detail?+

HEIC uses lossy compression, but at the default quality setting the difference is invisible to the human eye on photographic content.

Does Windows open HEIC?+

Windows 11 supports HEIC if the official Microsoft HEIF Image Extension is installed. Older versions and many third-party apps still struggle.

Will Apple Photos accept the converted files?+

Yes. Drop the HEIC files into Photos on macOS or iOS and they import normally with full EXIF metadata.

Can it batch hundreds of files?+

Yes, although encoding HEIC is slower than decoding it; expect a few seconds per photo on a modern laptop.
