How to convert AVIF to WebP

  1. Drop your AVIF files into the box.
  2. The browser decodes the AVIF natively, then encodes a WebP via Canvas.
  3. Download the WebP copies.

Why convert AVIF to WebP?

WebP and AVIF are both modern image formats designed for the web, but they sit on different sides of a usability gap. WebP has been supported in every major browser since 2020 and is accepted by virtually every CMS, marketing tool and stock-photo platform. AVIF, although technically smaller, only became safe to use in 2023 and is still rejected by some image proxies, older WordPress installs, and many corporate filters. Converting AVIF to WebP gives you a file that is still 25–35% smaller than the equivalent JPG but works everywhere WebP works, which today is essentially everywhere a customer might browse from. Keep both copies if your stack supports content negotiation, or replace the AVIF with the WebP if the destination cannot handle AVIF reliably.

How we compare

The closest peer to this tool is Google's Squoosh, which also runs fully in your browser. Squoosh focuses on compression for the modern web and does not handle HEIC or batch conversion. Cloudconvert and Convertio cover more formats but upload your files to their servers and meter usage.

Frequently asked questions

Will the WebP look the same as the AVIF?+

Visually almost identical at the default quality, but WebP files will be 20–40% larger than the AVIF because the underlying compression is older.

Is anything uploaded?+

No. Browser-native AVIF decode plus Canvas WebP encode means everything stays local.

Is WebP supported on iPhone?+

Yes since iOS 14. WebP is now usable on every modern device.

Why not just keep AVIF?+

If your destination platform supports AVIF, do. WebP exists for the long tail of platforms that have not caught up yet.

Can I convert hundreds of files?+

Yes. Batches are processed sequentially and can run in the background while you do other work.

Does it preserve transparency?+

Yes. WebP supports alpha and the channel carries through from the AVIF source.
