How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. Drop your GIF files into the box below.
  2. The browser decodes the first frame of each GIF and a Canvas exports a lossless PNG.
  3. Download the PNG copies individually or as a batch.

Why convert GIF to PNG?

GIF is an ancient format limited to a 256-colour palette, which is fine for simple graphics but produces visible banding on photographs and gradients. Converting a GIF to PNG gives you a lossless, full-colour image with proper transparency support, which is what most modern editors, design tools and document formats actually expect. PNG handles soft alpha edges far better than GIF's single transparent colour, so logos and icons stop showing the ugly fringe you sometimes see around a transparent GIF. Use this converter when you want to drop a GIF graphic into Photoshop, Figma or a slide deck, or when a website upload form accepts PNG but not GIF. Note that this tool converts the first frame of the GIF — it is built for static images, not for turning an animated GIF into a video.

How we compare

The closest peer to this tool is Google's Squoosh, which also runs fully in your browser. Squoosh focuses on compression for the modern web and does not handle HEIC or batch conversion. Cloudconvert and Convertio cover more formats but upload your files to their servers and meter usage.

Frequently asked questions

Does it convert animated GIFs?+

Only the first frame is converted. This tool is designed for static graphics; for an animated GIF you would need a GIF-to-video tool instead.

Are my files uploaded?+

No. Decoding and PNG encoding both happen inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent over the network.

Is transparency preserved?+

Yes. The transparent areas of the GIF carry through to the PNG, and PNG additionally supports smooth alpha edges that GIF cannot represent.

Will the PNG look better than the GIF?+

PNG is full-colour and lossless, so it removes the 256-colour banding GIF introduces. It cannot recover detail the GIF already discarded, but it will never add more loss.

Why is the PNG sometimes larger?+

PNG keeps every pixel in full colour while GIF uses a small palette. For simple graphics the sizes are similar; for complex images PNG can be larger.

Which browsers are supported?+

Every modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Brave — can decode GIF and export PNG via Canvas.
