Convert PNG to AVIF

Drop your PNG files and get AVIF copies that are typically 70–90% smaller. The encode happens in your browser, so even private design assets and screenshots never reach our servers.

How to convert PNG to AVIF

  1. Drop your PNG files into the box.
  2. Each image is decoded by the browser and re-encoded as AVIF via Canvas.
  3. Download the AVIF copies and use them in production with a PNG fallback if needed.

Why convert PNG to AVIF?

PNG is wonderful while you are editing because nothing is ever lost, but it is a terrible delivery format because lossless compression keeps every pixel verbatim. The same picture that takes 1.2 MB as a PNG often weighs 60–150 KB as AVIF and looks identical at normal viewing distance. If you publish PNGs on a website you are paying a meaningful bandwidth tax for no visible benefit. Convert to AVIF for delivery, keep the PNG as the editable master. The exception is when the PNG contains pixel-perfect text, line art or UI screenshots that you intend to ship at 100% zoom; AVIF can introduce subtle artefacts on hard edges that do not appear on PNG.

How we compare

The closest peer to this tool is Google's Squoosh, which also runs fully in your browser. Squoosh focuses on compression for the modern web and does not handle HEIC or batch conversion. Cloudconvert and Convertio cover more formats but upload your files to their servers and meter usage.

Frequently asked questions

Are files uploaded?+

No. Everything runs in your browser tab.

How much will I save on photos?+

Typically 70–90% smaller files. Very noisy textures save less; smooth gradients and skies save the most.

Will text or UI screenshots look bad?+

AVIF can blur very sharp edges at aggressive quality settings. For pixel-perfect UI assets, ship PNG or use a higher AVIF quality.

Does AVIF support transparency?+

Yes. The alpha channel from the PNG carries through.

Why is encoding slow?+

AVIF encoding is computationally heavy. Expect 1–4 seconds per image on a modern laptop.

Should I keep the PNG?+

Yes, if you may need to re-export. AVIF is a one-way lossy conversion.
